Our Schools' Report Card

1-  "…American public high schools are... seriously failing a substantial minority of young people across the nation," says Mike Cohen, president of Achieve, Inc.

Furthermore....“Large majorities of college instructors are dissatisfied with the job public schools are doing in preparing students for college when it comes to writing quality (62 percent) and their ability to read and comprehend complex materials (70 percent).”

 QUESTION:

Is the American school system, more particularly, Liberty High School too weak and not preparing students for college or even the real world?   How can we change this? Who is to blame?

  1. I think Liberty some what helps us for college but what if we don't want to go to college then it doesn't help us at all. Liberty should find out what all there students what to do when they get older and put them in classes that will help them get there isn't that what there supposed to do?? I also think the Liberty High School doesn't help to prepare us for the real world at all something's we will never need in our lives and why do we need to know them. Liberty should have more classes on actual real life things no just what happed in the past and tech us how to do bills and taxes and buy a home/apartment and the necessity of life not all the other b.s. I think the super intendants are to blame for not having that in the schools, but also the mayors of the states for it to.

    1. This is so true. Its like they assume that if you don't get good grades in school your going to end up a bum, when in actuality a lot of people don't finish high school and up having a great life.

    2. School isn't about the content they teach, it's the morals they're trying to teach us. The sole purpose of school is to teach us how to work hard to do things even though we don't like it. The problem is that not enough kids are grasping this concept.

  3. Liberty High School does help us but the student has to have motivation to go to college. Liberty cannot really prepare the student for the real world that is something the student should prepare his or her self for. Nobody is to blame except the student if he or she does not put the effort in.

    1. Yes. Thank you. Its not always the school and teachers to blame. Students do need to do their part.

    2. But some kids just aren't meant for school. Some are just better doing other things that don't involve learning about the history of poland.

    3. I agree that its not always the teachers and school. Some students need to care more because the students that don't it takes away from the other students that are there to learn and go to college. It takes away from the ones that do care because the teacher always has to stop and correct them.If you don't care why come to school?

  4. The liberty high school system has a goal of preparing us for college. They want to teach us everything we need to know to be able to go off to college and be successful. Some kids dont care or dont want to go to college so they just try to slide by with a passing grade not caring if they learn anything. Sometimes its the teachers and not the students. The teachers also have a curriculum that they have to get though in order to prepare us for the final exam. If there is a lot to learn and not a lot of time to teach it, the teacher will speed through it not making sure the kids understand it. They are just worried about making sure everything gets done wheather it was done correctly or not. Although that is not all of the teachers, some actually care about having the students understand what is being taught. In my opinion there isnt just one or two people or groups of people to blame. It is a little bit of everyone. Probably mostly your own fault your not ready, but also you could have a crappy teacher or bad classmates avoiding you from concentrating. This can be fixed by being more strict on the kids that dont care allowing the kids who do to be able to concentrate more. As for the teachers there can me like monthly monitoring making sure they are doing their job right and talking to kids about the class and how it is going.

    1. I agree that teachers should be "monitored" but more so, they should have surprise visits from principals!

But what can they do if they catch teachers slacking?

  5. Liberty High School isn’t weak at all, the school helps the students get ready for college in some way. I think personally that we should have other classes that can help the 62% of the students who can’t write and the 70% students who can’t read either because it’ll help them get prepared for college and the super intendants for college won’t have to complain as much to the High Schools. I personally think super intendants for High School are to blame because they’re not paying attention to the students who need help to read or write.

    1. I agree with this. We all get thrown into a class no matter what our learning ability is and some teachers only care if some kids understand it and the slower learners don't understand and don't have help.

    2. Actually I don't think that reading and writing are the only things that matter. I know some kids that cant do the simplest of algebraic equations when they are in algebra 2. Also don't forget that the super attendants have to go to other schools not just ours. But if they do pay more attention to the schools needs it would get better. Plus that number of students in liberty that can't read does not look right. Just saying because out of the thirty people I now personally they can read and right as far as I know. If you didn't catch that look back at that sentence mistake, the right should be write. That was still a good proposal of an argument thanks D Morales.

  6. The only people we can blame is ourselves. No one told you to flunk that test, no one told you to eat that burger while you were on a diet, and if they did it was your choice. College instructors have every right to be dissatisfied but they shouldn’t expect so much from us. People learn at different speeds but we have to try. If students don’t try then that explains why 70% of our generation cannot read and comprehend complex materials. Why do we say “Screw it!”? Because we’re lazy and our lives don’t revolve around what they should revolve around.

    1. I get it and agree, that "...they shouldn’t expect so much from us. People learn at different speeds but we have to try. " but so much more was expected from students decades ago and no one complained.. Is it because we have become so liberal with our thoughts and began to question everything.. has that hurt us now?

  7. You cant blame the schools if we realy wanted to be college ready we would be we would take the time to studie i woudent blame it in the school

  8. The American school system, along with Liberty High School, is not doing a well enough job with teaching students how to write proper papers. As it says in the article, “Large majorities of college instructors are dissatisfied with the job public schools are doing in preparing students for college when it comes to writing quality. . .”, which in itself tells us that we need to try harder to teach the students proper ways of writing college acceptable essays. LIberty High School also doesn’t take all of their students ways of learning into consideration. While a group of students may be at a higher reading and writing level ,there may also be students in the exact same class with only a Grade 3 reading and writing level. Although teachers at Liberty High School have a large diversity of students in their classroom, many teachers skip over the fact that a small majority of the class may not understand the subject.

    1. I am part of that small group that teachers skip over and we're the one failing the class. Why would teachers help the kids who get it and not the students who don't. Teachers ask why are you failing, it's because they aren't helping and that leads to the question of why are these teachers teaching? Teachers aren't really teaching if the know-it-all kids already know the curriculum and the slow-learners are still learning nothing.

  9. i dont think liberty prepares us for the real life. Just because we fail chemistry doesn't mean we arent going to live a full life or we are going to fail in life. We need more classes that teache us about real life and how its going to be when we actually get out of high school and or college

  10. I don't think liberty prepares for college or anything for life. We need classes that teaches about bills. How to pay for a house how to take care of our selfs on our own.

    1. I agree with this, because our generation isn't good with our social skills.

  11. I think Liberty really is trying to prepare us for the future. In my case they made me go to votech a series of classes dedicated to helping kids find out what they want to do when they grow up.

  12. I think Liberty High School is too weak and doesn't prepare us for college or the real world because of the no child left behind act. It basically is allowing students to work at their weakest and still be able to graduate. I think we should have classes that meet college standards to be prepared for what's next.

  13. Liberty just needs more real life classes. How to pay for bills? How to take care of a house? How to get a job? Not many people know any of this stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Liberty is the blame because they don’t teach us how to pay any bills. When we go out in the world we don’t use half of the things we learn in everyday life. Also, they have this thing where no kid is to be left behind. That shows kids that the world is easy and it isn’t. To make it better they should teach kids how to pay bills and not give any kid an easy road.

  15. We need to have classes to help use life on the real world like how to finance, pay for things, taxes. Stuff like this so we are not overwhelmed in the future.
